Business Challenge

This E-learning platform had drastic spikes in usage after things like results announcements, which required better load balancing to avoid crashes. On the flip side, when the platform was underutilized Fulcrum found many unused (idle) DB RDS instances and EBS volumes.

The client hence needed backup strategies for point-in-time recovery of servers, as well as setup of weekly and monthly maintenances for continuous monitoring of server vulnerabilities.

Solution

A preproduction AWS environment was created for those which didn’t exist previously. Fulcrum helped reduce network traffic load to ensure availability of platforms, and implemented a load-balancer to distribute the traffic and the downtime. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) of the AWS console was deployed to secure accounts, whilst SNS service & alarms were configured by using CPU, Memory and Disk utilization. Password policy for AWS IAM accounts were also set, installing Amazon Inspector to ensure compliance of best practices and security.
